Toyo Tires: Building the Better TireToyo Tire and Rubber Co., Ltd. was established in 1945. Although its main product line is the manufacture of rubber tires, Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. is also involved in producing several product lines, including automotive parts and industrial and chemical products. It didn’t begin exporting its truck tires until 1947. In 1961, it built the Technical Research Center as part of its commitment to becoming a world leader in advanced tire designs. In a bid to expand its presence in North America, Toyo Tires expanded its operations to the United States in 1966, where it is known as Toyo Tire Corporation. To cement its reputation as a company producing reliable tires, Toyo Tires built a tire testing course in Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. This was the first tire testing course built by a Japanese rubber tire manufacturer. In 1981, Toyo Tires (spelled Tyre) established its plant in the UK and quickly followed up by building a plant in Canada the next year. It began partnership with General Tire in 1983. Two years later, it established the Nippon Giant Tire Co., Ltd. In 1985, Toyo Tires partnered with two other tire manufacturing companies to build GTY Tire Company. This joint venture is participated in by General Tire (now Continental North America Inc.) and Yokohama Rubber. Its headquarters is in Illinois, USA. In 1999, Toyo Tires established Nitto Tire North America. From the late 90s to the early 2000s, Toyo Tire continued to expand its operations in many countries in both Asia and North America. Today, it is one of the most recognized tire brands in the world. Facts about Toyo Tires The Japanese name of Toyo Tire & Rubber is Toyo Gomu Kogyo Kabushiki-gaisha. Toyo Tires is one of the leading tire manufacturers in the world, selling tires in over 80 countries. It has headquarters and operations in many countries, including China, Canada, the Netherlands and the U.S. Toyo Tyre and Rubber Company spends about 57 million pounds each year for research and development. They have their own design software, the DSOC II or Dynamic Simulation Optimised Contact II. The software allows Toyo engineers to design tires using virtual reality, cutting manhour costs significantly. Toyo Tire Co. in the U.S. is Toyo Tire's first sales subsidiary in the United States. Toyo tires undergo rigorous testing to see how far and long they can withstand punishment. Testing plants are called Tyre Proving Grounds and are located in Japan, Germany and the United States. In 1991, Toyo Tires made one of the world's biggest rubber tires. It had a diameter of 3.5 meters and weighed more than 3 tons. If reprocessed, the tire would have enough rubber to make over 500 tires for passenger cars. From 1993 to 1994, Porsche used Toyo tires as part of its original equipment for several car models, including the 968 and 911 series. The tires were Toyo F1S and Toyo 920. In 1995, Toyo tires were chosen as the official tires for the vehicles of government officials in Chile. All Toyo Tire domestic plants obtained their ISO 14001 certification in 2000. Part of many Japanese industrial companies' programs is to achieve environmental friendliness in its operations. In 2004, Toyo Tires achieved zero emission for its 18 domestic plants.
